    Locals more efficient than FEMA

    15th September 2008

    No surprise.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, I was often complaining that locals weren’t considered as essential to the recovery. Debris collection and home remediation endeavors went to big contractors who subcontracted subcontracting subcontractors. At the end of the contract food chain, there was very little recovery money flowing into the local economy.

Now comes a story in The Times-Picayune which once again demonstrates how locals aren’t just essential for disaster recovery, but they can do disaster relief faster, cheaper, and tastier than the feds can do with their plastic MRE’s produced in factories.

The Hot Meals Task Force delivered “428,000 hot meals, saving $629,000 over the price of MREs.”
