“Republicans ’still know how to win elections’”
9th December 2008
House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) was more blunt, issuing a memo Sunday declaring: “The future is Cao.”
Yet three weeks ago, no one in the GOP establishment had even heard of Cao. …
Boehner never met him, nor did he or any other House Republican give his campaign a single penny from their political accounts. …
“The Cao victory is a symbol of what can be achieved when we think big, present a positive alternative, and work aggressively to earn the trust of the American people,” Boehner wrote in his memo.
Actually, Cao’s victory demonstrates what can happen in a one-in-a-million opening created by the indictment of a nine-term Democratic congressman, in a D+28 district, who couldn’t get voters enthusiastic enough to turn out to vote for him, after a field of other African-American candidates split the vote to allow Dollar Bill to compete in a run-off against a white Democrat, in a primary season delayed by Hurricane Gustav which caused far less African-American turnout than was seen in the presidential election a month earlier, in which the first African-American candidate was elected president.
Cao’s victory may demonstrate that Republican candidates can win races when they run their own campaigns, untainted by the poison of the national Republican Party’s socially-conservative hot-button issues platform, which continues to demonstrate that the party is completely out of touch with the issues that mainstream America wants its public officials to address.
